Why are you involved with FRUK? “As a clinician and researcher for over 3 decades, I am aware of the many unanswered questions that limit our ability to provide the best care for fertility problems. Unlike other clinical specialties, the UK has never had a charity dedicated to supporting high quality research in this field. I am excited to be part of Fertility Research UK and support it in its mission to address this unmet need. ”

Gwenda Burns

LinkedIn

Gwenda has spent more than 17 years in leadership roles supporting fertility patients across the UK, advocating for improved access to treatment and patient support. She has represented fertility patients across all four UK nations and in Europe, contributing to national and regional forums including the National Fertility Group, former CCG groups, government health working groups, the British Fertility Society, and Fertility Europe. Gwenda is a strong advocate for fair and equitable access to fertility treatment across the UK. Since 2010, she has been a member of Scotland’s National Fertility Group, which played a key role in achieving more equitable provision of services, including access to up to three cycles of treatment in line with NICE fertility guidelines. She remains committed to driving positive change for fertility patients and supporting research efforts that improve fertility care across the UK.

Why are you involved in FRUK? “To help ensure that individuals facing fertility challenges are supported by evidence-based, forward-thinking solutions. ”

Kevin McEleny

After training in urology in the North East of England, Kevin was appointed as a Consultant Urologist at the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust in 2009. He specialises in the investigation and treatment of Male Fertility problems and has conducted research studies in this area. He has introduced novel procedures for Male Fertility to Newcastle Fertility Centre, where he is based, receiving patients from across the UK. He is the current Chair of the British Fertility Society, having previously served as Chair of Education and Training. He has had a number of other national roles including on the NICE Fertility Guidelines Committee and the HFEA’s SCAAC (committee).

Why are you involved in FRUK? “One of the things that first attracted me to fertility was that despite such achievement and scientific discovery, it seemed so poorly understood and enigmatic. I believe that through research we can improve patient care and there is a real need to improve research opportunities in this area. ”
